What Is House Numerology?
What the number connected to your home might reveal about the chapter you're living.

Throughout our lives, we live in a lot of different homes.
There's our childhood home, or maybe several childhood homes. Then comes that first step away. Perhaps it's a dorm room, an apartment, a place shared with a friend or a significant other. Later, home might be a condo, a house, a rented room, somewhere temporary while we figure out what comes next, or someone else's home that becomes ours too.
Some homes we remember because of how they looked. Others stay with us because of how they felt.
There's the home where everything seemed to change, the one where life finally became quieter, the one that never quite felt settled. A home where a relationship began or a career ended. Maybe a child came into the world, or the family changed shape. Perhaps something was lost, rebuilt, or maybe an entirely different version of us began to emerge.
And through each one, we changed too.
That's the part that fascinates me.
So, Where Does Numerology Come In?
Numerology is a system that explores the meanings, patterns and qualities associated with numbers. Different numbers are connected with different themes, strengths and challenges. They aren't inherently good or bad, and the same energy can feel very different depending on the person and the chapter of life they're in.
To me, numerology isn't a prediction system. It's just another way to notice patterns, ask questions and look at an experience from a different angle.
When we apply that idea to where we live, we get what I call its Home Vibration. We're going to dive into what that means, but if you're curious, you can jump right in by calculating yours with the Home Vibration calculator.
I like calling it a Home Vibration because it leaves room for curiosity.
You don't need to know anything about numerology or decide how much you believe in it before you begin. Instead, I'd invite you to start with curiosity. Calculate the number connected with your home, learn a little about the themes associated with it, and just see what you notice.
I Started by Looking Backward
Once I began studying numerology more deeply, I didn't stop with the home I was living in.
I went backward.
I calculated the Home Vibrations for as many of my past homes as I could remember. Then I started thinking about the version of me who had lived in each one.
What was happening in my life? What changed while I was there? Which relationships shaped that chapter? Where did I feel grounded? Where did I feel restless? What was I learning?
I even looked at some of those addresses alongside my Personal Year numbers to see what else was happening numerologically during the same periods.
There were a few times I put the number beside the story of the home and thought, Wow, that's interesting.
One address in particular was 1305.
The Home That Held an Ending
I only lived at 1305 for a few years, yet that home left an impression. It held the ending of my first marriage and the ending of my life in South Dakota.
Years later, when I calculated the address, I realized that:
1 + 3 + 0 + 5 = 9
In numerology, 9 is associated with completion, endings, release and closing cycles. I didn't learn that first and then go searching for proof that the number had been right. Life happened first.
The marriage ended, closing out that chapter of my life, and before long I left South Dakota too. Much later, I put the number beside the story. Wow, that's interesting.
It's that curiosity, that oh wow! that keeps pulling me deeper and deeper into this work.
Not because I think the number caused those things to happen. It gives me another way to look back at a chapter I already lived and notice something I hadn't seen before.
How to Calculate Your Home Vibration
Want to know how to do this for yourself? It's super easy!
Start by identifying the street number assigned to your home and add those digits together until you reach a single digit.
So, for example:
2486 Main Street
The street number would be 2486. You'd add those digits together:
2 + 4 + 8 + 6 = 20
2 + 0 = 2
That home would have a 2 Home Vibration.
If your address was 1234 E. 1st Street, you would use 1234, not the 1 from the street name.
Every address can be reduced to a root number from 1 through 9. If your first total is 11, 22 or 33, though, you'll pause there first because those are Master Numbers. They carry meanings of their own, while their root numbers add another layer: 11/2, 22/4 and 33/6.
If you live in an apartment, condo, dorm or another shared building, you'll want to look at both the building's street number and your individual unit or room number. The street number speaks to the larger environment you share with everyone in the building, while your unit number is specific to the space you call home and may have a greater influence on your personal experience.
There are deeper layers within house numerology as well, yet you don't need all of them to begin.
Another Home Told a Very Different Story
Years later, my daughter and I were searching for a home with a very specific wish list.
We didn't want something that felt cookie-cutter. We wanted personality, interesting architecture and lots of natural light. We wanted a pool, an island with seating and pendant lights, upgraded cabinets, countertops and appliances, and specific flooring options. We looked and looked.
And then we found it.
It was much bigger than we needed, about 3,200 square feet, yet we loved it. Something about it just felt right.
Over the next eight years, we managed to fill all that space.
I met someone and that home held us as we blended our families. There was enough space for everyone to have a room of their own. And still, there were rooms I initially had no idea what to do with that eventually became meaningful spaces.
My office became a favorite. I loved holding space for my clients as their coach, practitioner and facilitator of the many alternative healing modalities that became part of my world. That space felt cozy, comfortable, inviting and safe.
I enjoyed our bedroom too. It was large and filled with natural light, and I loved the furniture we had chosen for it. Even the bathroom, with its jetted tub, felt like a place where I could retreat for a while.
One of my favorite everyday moments was walking down the stairs each morning and taking in the sunlight that poured through the many windows and filled the space below.
I loved that home.
And still, I never felt completely settled there.
There was always movement.
That home held us through the pandemic, the end of my corporate career and the beginning of entrepreneurship. It held years of experimenting, questioning, learning and figuring out what my work was actually becoming. It held our kids growing up and moving out. It held happiness and grief. It held a lot.
The person who first stepped into that home and the person who eventually moved out were not the same.
At some point, the very things that had once felt expansive began to feel like more than we needed. There was a lot to clean, a lot to maintain, the utility bills of a 3,200-square-foot home, and a commute that increasingly felt too far from the places we spent our time.
We started wanting something simpler.
Then I looked at its Home Vibration. It was a 14/5. Five carries themes of movement, freedom, change and adaptability. Even before getting into the deeper layer of the 14, the 5 alone made me look at those eight years differently.
That home held a tremendous amount of change. Some of it was exciting, and some of it was difficult. Much of it helped shape who I became. And once again, the experience came first. The number gave me another way to see it.
Is There a Good or Bad Home Vibration?
No. It doesn't work that way.
Numerology teachers emphasize that numbers have both supportive and challenging expressions, and context influences how those qualities are experienced.
Freedom can feel exhilarating when you're ready for change and deeply uncomfortable when what you want is stability. Structure can feel reassuring in one season and restrictive in another. Solitude can offer restoration or turn into isolation.
Every Home Vibration has gifts and challenges. Understanding both gives you another way to work intentionally with the energy of your home.
Awareness doesn't mean you're stuck with whatever a number supposedly brings. It gives you an opportunity to notice what may need more balance, intention or attention in the way you experience your home.
Home Vibration Is One More Number
When we're choosing a home, there are already plenty of numbers to consider: bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage, price, interest rate and monthly payment. Then there's the condition of the place, location, commute, inspections and how the space actually works for your life.
Home Vibration doesn't replace any of that. It gives you another layer you can explore.
And if you feel a strong pull to a particular home, get curious! There may be something about the space, timing or chapter you're entering that resonates before you can fully explain why.
With every home, I'd encourage you to consider both the practical and the personal.
What does this home offer you?
What might it ask of you?
What are you hoping to bring into your life, and what are you ready to release?
What does this space need to hold for you?
And perhaps the biggest question:
Who are you becoming?
Homes Can Be Mirrors
The deeper I go into this work, the more I feel we're often drawn to people, places and experiences that give us the opportunity to learn, grow and become.
Relationships can show us something about ourselves. So can careers, friendships and experiences. Homes can too.
That doesn't mean every difficult experience was destined to happen or that we somehow chose every painful thing we've gone through. It means having a willingness to look at the places we've lived and ask what each one reflected, supported, challenged or made possible during that chapter.
Who was I when I arrived?
What happened while I was there?
What did I discover about myself?
And who was I becoming by the time I left?
Those questions are a much bigger part of House by the Numbers than simply reducing an address to a single digit.
Try It With Your Own Story
Start with the home you live in now. Calculate its Home Vibration and then go backward.
Think of the homes you remember well enough to calculate. Write down the numbers and a few words or sentences about the version of you who lived in each place.
Which home(s) held a beginning?
Which held an ending?
Where did you feel grounded? Or restless?
Which home(s) belonged to a version of you that barely feels like you anymore?
You don't need to make your story fit the number. Put them beside each other and notice what happens.
One may leave you thinking, I don't see it at all.
Another might make you stop and say: Wow, that's interesting.
It's really an invitation to get curious. To look at the places you've called home and notice the stories that unfolded there.
At House by the Numbers, house numerology is a reflection tool, not a rulebook. It's a way to explore the relationship between the places we live, the chapters they hold and the people we become while living inside them.
Every home holds a story. What's yours?
